DOD Unveils MOSA Implementation Guidebook

(Executive Gov) The Department of Defense announced on Tuesday the release of a guidebook that offers best practices for planning, implementing and evaluating a modular open systems approach, dubbed MOSA, and provides recommendations when developing requests for proposals and assessing planned approaches for implementing MOSA. The Office of Systems Engineering and Architecture within the DOD Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering developed the guidebook, which seeks to provide military services, contractors and civilians with information on how to integrate MOSA into programs as part of the defense acquisition life cycle. Trump announces new White House shipbuilding office

(Breaking Defense) President Donald Trump today announced the creation of a shipbuilding office in the White House centered on revitalizing the nation’s commercial and naval shipbuilding industry. “To boost our defense industrial base, we are also going to resurrect the American shipbuilding industry, including commercial shipbuilding and military shipbuilding,” Trump said during a presidential address to a joint session of Congress, to applause from Republican lawmakers. “And for that purpose, I am announcing tonight that we will create a new office of shipbuilding in the White House and offer special tax incentives to bring this industry home to America where it belongs. Machine learning and digital custodianship could help Network Rail with asset inspections

(New Civil Engineer) Machine learning and digital custodianship could help Network Rail with the “systemic issues” that exist within its structures inspections regime, according to an artificial intelligence (AI) tech company. Mind Foundry is “a machine learning company which spun out of Oxford University’s machine learning research group in 2015”, explained its director of civil infrastructure Tom Bartley. He added that one of Mind Foundry’s “key areas of research is around aging infrastructure”. This is has been a growing problem for Network Rail. Recently, the regulator Office of Rail and Road (ORR) penned a scathing letter calling out “systemic issues” within Network Rail’s compliance with asset examination requirements last month. Once-in-a-lifetime’ planetary parade photo captures 10 celestial bodies in a single shot

(Space.com) A rare grouping of 10 celestial bodies is captured in a stunning new photo taken during last weekend’s great planetary parade. Astrophotographer Josh Dury took the photo you see above on Feb. 28, when seven planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — lined up on the same side of the sun. Dury photographed this rare cosmic event from the Mendip Hills, Somerset, U.K. The next time this s type of cosmic alignment should appear is the year 2040. Read More
